Existing crypto wallets can be complex and intimidating for beginners, hindering broader adoption of cryptocurrency. Security features are often overly technical, and user interfaces lack intuitiveness.

Research shows that while crypto interest is rising fast, complexity remains the biggest barrier. 68% of respondents cited confusion as a major issue. In my own Twitter survey, 50% prioritized security, followed by intuitive UI (33.3%). Advanced DeFi features and low fees were far less important — proving users care more about clarity and trust than advanced functionality.

I analyzed the top 3 crypto wallets — their features, UX patterns, customer sentiment, and positioning. This helped reveal what users liked, what was missing, and where Hermes could stand out. These insights guided key decisions around strategy and feature prioritization.

Some wallets extend beyond mere storage, acting as gateways to the exciting world of Decentralized Finance (DeFi). This opens doors to explore innovative financial opportunities like staking and lending, all within a familiar interface.

Security concerns include the need to relinquish control of private keys and the risk of phishing attacks with browser extension wallets. Other issues are restricted blockchain support and closed-source software limiting codebase verification.

To define key functionality, I mapped core user flows, especially around wallet actions in the dashboard section. Once the structure was clear, I created low-fidelity wireframes in Figma for both the app and the landing page, with extra attention to mobile usability.

Once the flows and wireframes were set, I moved into high-fidelity design in Figma, focusing on sharp visuals, responsive layouts, and a cohesive look across both the wallet and landing page. The landing header was designed to convert, with just enough visual flair to grab attention without sacrificing clarity.

I ran moderated tests with six crypto-native users, focusing on navigation flow and dark mode accessibility. Their insights helped refine interaction patterns and UI clarity. In parallel, I built a scalable design system with reusable components and documented variables — laying the groundwork for consistent development and future features across the entire product.

Designing Hermes pushed me to bridge security and usability, a constant tension in crypto. Through research and user testing, I explored how design can simplify complexity without compromising trust. The process sharpened my ability to turn insights into systems and taught me that even in conceptual projects, structure, clarity, and purpose are non-negotiable.
